Quote FKEY
©1990 by Mike Gleason Jr.
INTRO:
Quote FKEY is a power tool in a telecommunicator's tool belt. It's sole
purpose is to quote text other users have written. For example, when you
are reading messages from a local bulletin board system, and you want to
include a portion of the other user's message, you would use this FKEY.
Why not just copy the text as usual and paste? Well, most BBS and other
message systems do not allow you to enter in lines equal to 80 characters,
but when you read the messages they usually use 80 character lines. My
FKEY neatly transforms copied text so they will fit within those shorter
lines.
HOW TO INSTALL:
To use any FKEY, you must copy them to your System file, OR copy them to a
suitcase file for utilities like Suitcase II. To copy them to your System
file, you need to use ResEdit to copy the FKEY resource to your System, OR
an FKEY Installer program. If you are using Suitcase II, you could just
open it up and specify that the "quote fkey" file be "Reopened at Startup",
but if I were you I would use ResEdit to copy the FKEY resource to a suitcase
file containing other FKEY resources.
HOW TO INVOKE QUOTE FKEY:
To use any FKEY you need to type COMMAND-SHIFT-x, where x is the ID number of
the FKEY resource. I have set quote fkey's ID number to 9, so you would just
type COMMAND-SHIFT-9. You may also use ResEdit or an FKEY installer to change
the ID number if you want.
HOW TO USE QUOTE FKEY:
Select some the text you want to quote and COPY/CUT it. Then, INVOKE the
quote fkey as shown above. The text you copied has now been transformed.
Now PASTE the quoted text as you wish.
LET'S SEE SOME EXAMPLES:
Ok, say for example I want to quote the "HOW TO INVOKE QUOTE FKEY" passage to
paste in a message. I would follow the procedure above, and then upon pasting,
I would get:
> To use any FKEY you need to type COMMAND-SHIFT-x, where x is the
> ID number of the FKEY resource. I have set quote fkey's ID
> number to 9, so you would just type COMMAND-SHIFT-9. You may
> also use ResEdit or an FKEY installer to change the ID number if
> you want.
Note how the passage has been quoted in the de-facto standard ">" character
(I don't know who standardized it or why...). Also note how the passage is
indented on the left and right side, and it is also word-wrapped.
Now let's say I didn't want to quote a whole paragraph, but few sentences
in the "HOW TO USE QUOTE FKEY" passage:
> Then, INVOKE the quote fkey as shown above. The text you copied
> has now been transformed.
That's all there is to it!
If you use my fkey, I would appreciate it if you would let me know that you
like it, like a postcard or email. Money would be nice, but you're not
obligated to do send any.
